lead roof

What is lead roofing?

In simple terms lead roofing, sometimes also known as ‘flashing’ refers to thin pieces of materials made from lead and specifically designed to halt the flow of water through them in your roof structure.

Lead roofing is a process whereby roofers use lead tiles to cover your roof. In this article we will explain how that works, what the benefits are and how we can help you

How Does It Work?

As one of the first metals in the world to be smelted, lead has been used for roofing for centuries. Lead roofers marveled continuously over the years at its attributes. Its durability and malleability allows the metal to be moulded into various simple and complex shapes and still maintain its strength. It is non-combustible and highly resistant to corrosion. These characteristics of lead help make it a superb solution for all roofing applications.

Milled Lead also known as rolled lead is manufactured by having a solid slab of lead pass consistently through two hydraulic rollers to form a sheet with precise consistency and thickness. This type of production method is a highly automated process which ensures that each lead roll is the same thickness along the entire length of the roll.

Sand Cast Lead is a more traditional method of producing lead. This is done by preparing a bed of sand on a casting bench. Then, molten lead is poured over the bed of prepared sand. Casters then use a bar of wood with a handle at each end and move it down the length of the casting bench until they get the required thickness. This is a method done by hand rather than automated equipment like Milled Lead.

Machine Cast Lead or more commonly known as Cast Lead is manufactured by partially submerging a water cooled drum in a bath of molten lead whilst being rotated. The lead sticks to the side of the drum and solidifies as it rotates and after, the lead is peeled of and cut. This type of manufacturing does not give the consistency and thickness of Milled Lead but is much more cost effective.
